Biography of Silas Conrad Kimm by Frances Darling Kimm Jordan
"The Silas Conrad Kimm story begins on July 2, 1863, during the Civil War. He was born to Jacob and Katherine Ring Kimm in a log cabin in the Wilderness during the Civil War. After the war the government opened up the western territories to settlers so Jacob and many other Germans tracked westward, first settling in Iowa. Silas and his mother stayed in Salisbury where she died. Left alone at an early age, he lived with relatives. He picked berries and walked three miles to market to sell them to earn money to buy his clothes.
After the passage of the Free School Act of 1867, Silas lived with Billy Tanner and attended a little red school house. It contained a few feet of wooden blackboard much in need of paint and an old torn dictionary. Seats were common board which held three pupils. In the middle of the room stood a cast iron box stove. The children made their own books of lessons copied from the teacher's books which were elaborately handwritten with a quill pen.
When only eleven years of age, Silas hired out to do farm work, milking and mowing fields of hay by hand. He was up at 4:00 a.m. in summer and 5:00 a.m. in winter and all work was done without farm machinery.
Ambitious to earn more money, at sixteen he became a lumberjack learning all the difficult jobs from sawing trees to peeling bark from hemlock trees which was ground into tan bark to tan hides.
Determined to become a teacher, he entered Fairfield Seminary in the fall of 1881. He paid his room rent by being the school bellringer calling students to classes and meals, and being the custodian of the Town Clock the chapel belfry. He walked seven miles each Saturday and Sunday to and school carrying his week's provisions on his back.
To earn money he began teaching in 1882. In 1885 he returned to Fairfield Seminary and graduated in 1886. In August of that year he married Hattie May Darling. He taught until 1891 when he was selected by the Northern New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to take charge of Antwerp Seminary, a boarding school.
In the fall of 1892, he entered Hamilton College. In December his first child, Willard Ives Kimm, was born. After one-and-a-half years he transferred to Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. He was graduated in 1896 with an A.B. degree. He continued to teach and started a three-year course leading to a degree of Doctor of Philosophy. At this time Hamilton College conferred on him a degree of Master of Arts in recognition of his service to the children of Central New York State. In 1900 he published a book The Iroquois, a History of the Six Nations of New York State, one of the few authoritative histories of the Iroquois. He received his Ph.D from Taylor University of Indiana.
On January 1, 1912, he assumed the duties of Superintendent of the Second Supervisory District of Herkimer County. He retired in 1936 after 54 years of educational work. After retiring, he spent his time writing on historical subjects, writing poetry, and genealogy of early Herkimer County settlers.
Because of his untiring efforts to improve the condition of the country schools, he was called the "Father of the Central School System.
He died on March 16, 1957. Besides his son, Willard, he left two daughters, Pauline Faxon and Frances Jordan, and nine grandchildren."
