The Book of Kimm

The Family of Martin Kimm

No proof has been found of the relationship between the Martin Kimm family and the family of Jacob Conrad Kimm. Justus (G.H.) Kimm sent money to help the family come to the United States, and family members believe they are cousins. Since many of this family of Kimm live in the same area of Iowa as the Jacob Conrad Kimm family members, it was decided to include the information on the Martin Kimm family in this book. Hopefully, proof will be found of the relationship. This material has been compiled by Marie Kimm Gerner and Robert Clarence Kimm.

Martin and Anna Seizer Kimm came to the United States in the year 1883. They were accompanied by three children: George, Jacob, and Mary. They settled north of West Amana and purchased some land, built a home, and farmed for their livelihood.

George worked hard to make a living. He was educated in Germany and was very knowledgeable in religion and current events. He was known for his custom work with his threshing machine, corn sheller, and buzz saw. He held offices in the Watkins Telephone Company, the elevator, he was Treasurer of the school district and was also a supervisor of Lenox Township. He was a staunch Republican.
In the Watkins Centennial Book Years to Remember (p 151-152) the following information was included about George:

"George was a road supervisor and many men worked their poll tax under his supervision. Men came with a team and metal scraper and worked for a day. The harness lines were knotted, put over their shoulder, (they) yelled the horses names, and soon the scraper was filled and elevated to the low places in the road or bridge washouts. If men didn't have a team, they worked two days or paid $4.00.

George was well known for his Woods Threshing Machine, corn sheller and wood buzz saw. He often remarked of a puffing steam engine that the shrill whistle was "music to his ears"."

George built a home on the first acres he farmed, an eighty acre farm near West Amana. In 1949 he built a new home in Norway next to his brother, Jake. The last six years of his life he lived with Marie and Elmer Gerner.

His family respected him very much.

D 349th Infantry from 29 Apr 1918 to 16 May 1918; Co C 360th Infantry until his death. He was a private and was killed in battle at Meuse-Argonne.

Emma and Otto moved east of Amana to a farm. They lived there many years. Otto loved to hunt and fish. Later they moved south and west of Marengo, and then they bought a farm east of Marengo. They celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Martin was a farmer near Blairstown until he built a home in Blairstown and became associated with the D-X Oil Company. Martin and Helen were married 57 years.

George Dempster was drafted into World War II service. He became ill at Camp Van Doren, Mississippi, and died on 30 Mar 1943. He was buried at the Swedenburg Cemetery in Lenox Township near Norway, Iowa.

Jacob was a carpenter and he built some lovely large homes in Benton and Iowa Counties. The beautiful brick Catholic Church in Norway, Iowa, was one of his projects. He also owned and operated a hardware store. Many a woodburning stove left that building! He built the home where they lived in Norway for over fifty years. It was on top of the hill near the park. He took pride in his work. He lived to be ninety years old. His wife then moved to Cedar Rapids to be near her children. She also lived to be ninety. Their bodies are in the Swedenburg Cemetery south of Norway.

Mary married Fred in Iowa County. They farmed in this county for some time. Fred became involved with bootlegging and the law was after him so he struck out and homesteaded some land in Potter County, South Dakota. He sent for his family and there they farmed and operated a butcher shop in Forest City, bordering the Missouri River. His customers were mostly Indians for the reservation was across the river. After a large dam was built, they were forced to move to higher ground.

They lived their last years in Gettysburg, South Dakota. They are entombed east of Gettysburg
