At the age of eighteen, Gus worked for International Harvester Company selling farm implements. In 1903 and 1904, he owned a blacksmith shop in Blairstown. Anna did clerking for Bellinbergs General Store in Keystone from 1901 to 1905. They married April 19, 1905. In 1907, their only child, Berenice Delia was born. The "Delia" was for Gus' youngest sister who died at five years of age from diphtheria.

In 1909, Grandfather Justus had bought many acres of land in South Dakota near Huron. Gus Jr. and family joined the large family to farm near Wolsey, South Dakota. Anna's health was not good due to the alkaline water and their barn collapsed from a windstorm which led them to return to Iowa in 1911.

Gus worked at carpentry doing some of the wiring for the first electricity in buildings and homes in the Blairstown area. In 1916 they bought out the Budde General Store on East Main Street. In addition to selling food and supplies to the farming community, Gus sold insurance and
real estate.

In 1917, they bought the adjoining building enlarging their store as "Kimms General Store." They served the Blairstown community until 1942 -- twenty-five years.

Berenice grew up in Blairstown, receiving all of her education in the Blairstown school system just one short block from her home. She studied piano and was pianist for a dance band created by Gus, her violinist father. They played for lodge dances and country home dances where the living room rug was rolled up to provide a dance floor; children brought along slept on coats on the bed as the evening wore on. Everyone brought food for the midnight lunch after which dancing continued until everyone decided it was time to go home. If the family had no piano, Gus and Berenice loaded a small pump organ into the car, and it provided the chords for Gus' fiddling of square, round, circle two-steps, schottisches, polkas and waltzes for the evening. After Rex's death in 1954, Berenice, Joyce (20), Mary (15), and John (11) moved to Fayette, Iowa, where Berenice (at age 47) and Joyce enrolled at Upper Iowa University. She also served as housemother to eight upper class women. With the great help of all her children, Berenice graduated in three years and two summers with B.A. degrees in Elementary Music and Elementary Education. Mary graduated from high school the same year, John, tenth grade. Berenice then taught at LaPorte City, Hedrick and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until she married Ronald Kanke in 1963.

In relating this, Berenice feels she shows the Justus Kimm Sr/Gus Kimm Jr traits of courage, wisdom, fortitude, common sense, creativity, and adventure along with the will to do what needs to be done. Her family members all show these same qualities.
