Mayme was a rural school teacher before she married. John was a farmer and also operated a threshing machine. From 1905 until John's death, they managed the hotel at Norway, Ia. John was killed in a train accident. Mayme and her children managed the hotel for a year after his death and then moved to Cedar Rapids in 1909.

Emma and Stuart worked at the Isis Theater, Cedar Rapids, la until 1917. They were married that year in Chicago, Ill. on their way to Detroit, Mich. where they were musicians at the Madison Theater. Emma was a pianist and Stuart a violinist in an orchestra of about forty people. From 1935-64 they owned and operated the Coon Drug Store, Atkins, Iowa. Stuart Coon was a World War I veteran.
