Bruce signed with the White Sox during his senior year of high school in 1969. He had been a three-time all state choice in baseball at Norway and tied a state tournament record in basketball with a 46-point game. He was later traded and was with the Detroit Tigers in 1976 and caught for "The Bird," Mark Fidrych, a flamboyant pitcher. In 1980, the White Sox again signed him up after 11 years, 10 cities and 18 changes of address. He was their full time starting catcher. He was described as being a "clear cut starter exceeding all expectations." He retired from baseball in 1981. He returned to baseball in 1982 to serve as manager of a Detroit A team at Lakeland, Florida.
